Chateau Ramezay Historical Site and Museum

Chateau Ramezay was built in 1705. The lavish home of governor Claude de Ramezay, it is Quebec’s oldest history museum and is a National Historic Site of Canada.

In other words, this popular Montreal wedding venue is super fancy, super impressive, and super pretty.

The museum is in the heart of Old Montreal. It's across from City Hall and just steps away from Place Jacques Cartier with it's crowds of happy sun seekers and tourists strolling by. Despite it's central location, the Museum is a tranquil oasis, and seems far away from noise and people.

Weddings are held both inside the museum (think carved mahogany walls and crystal chandeliers) or behind the museum in the Governors Garden. For me, inside the museum is nice, but the 18th century French colonial gardens are spectacular.

In Ramezay’s day, the gardens were over 4,000 square meters, and included an orchard, a kitchen garden and a pleasure garden. Over the years, the property slowly shrank as new cobblestone streets went in and buildings sprang up all around.

Today, the Governor's Garden is just 750 square meters, but it is a gorgeous setting for a wedding nonetheless. It’s a replica of an 18th century French garden. Divided into three equal-sized sections, there’s a a kitchen garden, an orchard and a pleasure garden. There’s also an herb and medicinal garden and a pretty ram's-head fountain built into a one of the old stone walls.

The garden is great for portraits of the bride and groom, group photos and a wonderful place for kids to run wild.

People also have the option have their wedding inside the museum as well:
